Precious Cargo

Hong Kong, 2017

Precious Cargo was a group exhibition by South African multidisciplinary collective, Danger Gevaar Ingozi (DGI), for the inaugural edition of Full Circle Art Africa in Hong Kong.

My contribution to the show was a mixed media series and performance titled: This Is How You Lost Her

I used photography and colour-manipulation to highlight the complicated experience of being an outsider in more ways than one, whilst also feeling at home on the outside.

First, if we pause to look around us, we might find ourselves on the periphery of urban environments that were never designed for us in the first place: spaces whose ghosts of spatial planning past still roam corridors, where brutalism runs deeper than architectural aesthetic.

Then, if we stop a little longer, we may feel the deeper tug of a warning bell reminding some of us were never meant to be outside / ‘here’ / moving freely at all.

Still, we may find that ‘outside’ offers a freedom that cannot be found behind closed doors. What then?
